Michael Weingrad, Academic Director
Michael Weingrad is Portland State University's first full-time
professor of Judaic Studies. He received his undergraduate degree
from Yale University and his PhD from the University of Washington,
and has been a Fulbright Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
a Montague Burton Fellow in Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds,
and a Harry Starr Fellow at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard
University. His teaching and research interests concern modern Jewish
literature and culture. He has published articles in Prooftexts,
Jewish Social Studies, AJS Review, Commentary, and other publications,
and is completing a book about Hebrew literature written in the United
States.
Natan Meir, Lorry I. Lokey Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies
Natan Meir received his Ph.D in Jewish history from Columbia University
in 2003, taught at the University of Southampton (U.K.) from 2004 to
2008, and was a Yad Hanadiv postdoctoral fellow at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem in academic year 2007-08. His scholarly interest is modern
Jewish history, focusing on the social and cultural history of East
European Jewry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His first
book, Kiev: Jewish Metropolis, 1861-1914, is forthcoming from Indiana
University Press.
