Survey of Jewish history from the end of the middle ages to the Holocaust and the creation of the State of Israel. Major readings explore the Jewish encounter with modernity as seen through the life experiences of four individuals: Amos Elon, Founder: A Portrait of the First Rothschild and His Time; Puah Rakovsky, My Life As A Radical Jewish Woman: Memoirs of a Zionist Feminist in Poland; Victor Klemperer, I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years, 1933-1941; Sasson Somekh, Baghdad, Yesterday: The Making of an Arab Jew. (This course is required for the Judaic Studies Minor.)

Introduction to Israel from its origin in the national hope of the Jewish people through the development of modern political Zionism to the foundations of the state and its modern history. Topics include modern Israeli political culture, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the current "Peace Process," Israeli religious life, music and folklore, Jewish identity and the creation of Modern Hebrew and revisionist readings of the founding of the State of Israel. Films, guest speakers, and web-based education are an integral part of the course. (This course fulfills the Israel area requirement for the Judaic Studies Minor.)
